Long time, no post

Hey yall. As it turns out, we bit off more than we could chew with this whole blog thing. However, it is summer right now, and I figured (since it will probably be deleted soon if I don't) I'd jump on and see about maybe starting up some summer posts.

It so happens that I have much more interesting happenings than an 07 Accord recently. My dad and I have been hard at work with the 69 Z28 mentioned in previous posts. The interior is nearly finished, and though many of the parts are remaining performance race grade parts from the previous owner, it is finally appearing stock. And, yesterday (with the assistance of July 4th sales) we finished purchasing (hopefully) the last few things we need to get it ready before we drop the engine back in from Firewheel Classics in Wylie, TX. It's a great little first gen Camaro/ firebird shop.

Anyway, if nothing else, I figured I would try to revitalize the main blog a little bit and possible pick up some of the other tabs toward the middle of August.

Enjoy

-Edit- Due to lack of interest and material, I will be removing FND and the Forum in short order. If more viewers happen, they'll be back with a vengeance.

Things Don't Go as Planned

Hey everyone, I'm sorry to inform you that I will be unable to continue participating in Thrown Rods. I gave it a shot but I need to focus on other things.

Update on Everything

Alright you car nuts and nut jobs, every once in a while, I'm gonna hop on here and give y'all a web-wide update on the automotive world. And no, Griffin, I'm not turning the blog into a repost site, so don't get your panties in a wad. Well let's see what's goin on...

From autonews.com, there are rumors of a RWD large sedan roaming about in detroit near the GM proving grounds, so for all those Cadillac fans out there, looks like y'all get a fun new toy. Check it out here. Now I was hatin' on Toyota for all the recalls, but now it looks like the Nissan Frontier gets another recall too. I'm pretty partial to Nissan, but you gotta wonder why the circuit breakers don't work. Here's the article. Tesla is up and coming in America apparently as their stocks reach record highs, and after Honda's Acura stopped selling so well, they figured they'd spend some more money on it. Look at that and more on their home page. Can't look at everything unless you're subscribed though, so that's a bummer.

From Jalopnik, Ford is dropping Microsoft for Blackberry in their cars, the 2015 Citroën C1 is hideous, F1 cars are getting hacked these days, and Jaguar decided to put out a really fun wagon. That and more right here.

From autoblog (far less important than thrown rods blog...), Nissan, Mazda, Bentley, everyone else getting ready for Geneva, VW trying to save the plant in TN, and a new worlds fastest car (270.49 mph). As always, I can't cover it all, so check out the rest.

I'd say that could keep y'all busy for a while. If you have any other auto sites you'd like to see on here, leave us a little comment or shoot us an email to thrownrodsblog@gmail.com. Griffin would like to hear from you, as he is pretty consistently occupied with My Little Pony, and needs a break from that I'm sure.

EDIT: I'm sorry y'all, I really tried to keep it to actual pertinent news, but I couldn't just not include this. Russia made a bear-proof, six-wheel, floating truck.... yep. Find it at the NBC link, but let's be real. It's from Jalopnik. Of course it is. How could that article not be Jalopnik? Enjoy your day everyone.

Anyone wanna buy us this project?

As I am intensely busy, I feel like I owe it to yall to post something between now and my next three day study session. So here it is- give me money. I've always wanted to bring something like this back to life, but I've never had the means, and if I did, I'd probably spend it elsewhere. Like save it for a dream car. But I really want this truck to come back. It would be sad to see it rot.

It's just a good 'ol 68 chevy short bed. Rolling chassis, almost in good shape? I don't know that I'd give him the $2,500 he's asking, but Man, that'd be a fun restoration. Anyway, just food for thought. If you've got a spare three grand you'd like to throw my way, I wouldn't say no.

Keep on keepin on,

Why is Toyota constantly a top safety pick?

Toyota tells N.A. dealers to stop selling several models for safety issueToyota may be in line to have another recall. Why, you might ask? Because they used flammable cloth for their seats. I mean, I know that, ideally, you'd never really have a fire on your seat. But this is a vehicle who's company is consistently producing cars achieving outstanding safety ratings, yet their floor mats make pedals stick and their seats catch fire. Anyway, check out the story here. And if you drive a Toyota, I'd avoid smoking and roasting marshmallows in it.

*Edit* They are saying there is a good chance there won't be a recall, which is good for Toyota I suppose. Their reasoning is that they found that the seat cloth may not be 'up to snuff' but there have been no reports of any concerns by Toyota owners. Glad everyone is safe for now. Hope it stays that way.

End of an Era? Not Quite

Still looks like a panda bear with a unibrow
Earlier today Connor posted about the recent passing of the Type II Microbus. After doing a bit of searching I found some news that should put a smile on the faces of all the VW van lovers out there. The latest Kombi was a very slightly updated version of the model from 1967. It had the 78hp 1.4L engine carried over from the VW Fox and a large black radiator cut into the front. For the past 37 years the little van has been produced in massive numbers in Brazil. Recently there has been some legislation which requires all vehicles produced there to have ABS and airbags. The bus's production was in danger of being canceled, but then some big names in the Brazilian government gave a glimmer of hope, saying that they could see waiving the legislation restrictions on the Kombi. Their reasoning was that there is currently no match to the van on the market there and therefor nothing to replace it. Hopefully they continue making that little guy for at least a little while.

Connor, as for the beetle, 2003 called and they have some sad news for you.

The end of an era. I've got a soft spot for microbuses

The Last VW Microbus
By Connor Wilkinson
Last Volkswagen Type 2 Kombi made heads for factory museum in Hannover
The Last Bus Arrives (www.autoweek.com)

A sad day is upon us. On December 20, 2013, the very last Type-2 Kombi Last Edition was assembled in Brazil. Sure, America phased it out in the 70's, but Mexico, Argentina, and Brazil had the honor of carrying on the legacy. I love these things- almost got one as my first car when I was 16. At any rate, demand just never died for these things. The worst part is that IT STILL HASN'T. The only reason it is leaving us is that the Brazillian government changed its safety policies.

The very last production model (the 1,200th) has arrived in Germany to be kept pristine with other VW products from through the ages at the vehicle exhibit of the Volkswagen Commercial Vehicle headquarters in Hanover. The bus has had many different alterations to it's design, but it retained it's iconic form. an example of these changes- the latest models were water-cooled (where as air cooled has always been the standard in the microbus), but again, the bus remained a "sleek" two-tone bread box. The symbol of Volkswagen MPV's lived a long life with 3.5 million units produced since 1950.

Now I know it hardly belongs on a site with sections for Hot Rods, drag racing, and classic muscle cars, but regardless- it has been in the automotive world far longer than most vehicles. And that is pretty admirable. See the full article at autoweek.com for more about the revered history of the microbus, the second longest produced passenger vehicle with 63 years of production, second only to the beetle, which is still kicking. Germans do something right with their cars.

*Edit* Griffin has made me acutely aware of the fact that the Microbus may not be discontinued after all. As I referenced in the first paragraph of the post, the Brazilian production ceased because of governmental policy. Therefore, currently the bus is out of production, however it may very well be brought back soon. See the article at Jalopnik. And yes Griffin, I love little vans. I don't know what is wrong with that. :)
